Book Review : Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

Honestly, I’ve stumbled upon this book a month ago over at the Kindle store, but because I’ve always preferred reading on paperback I was able to get a copy from my uncle, who merely finished this in 2 days. I know, him already! It took me about 2 whole weeks to finish this book because I am too tired to read it once I reach home. I can only count on myself to read 3-5 pages or a whole chapter and then finally dozing off in my bed. There were even times when my mom had to wake me up because my head is lying on the book as if it were a pillow. She would even tell me, “Nagsasayang ka na naman ng kuryente!” (You are wasting electricity again!)

Anyways! Lets not anymore beat around the bush and lets get down to it! The only thing I know about the rich Chinese Asians are those who are in the Forbes List of Top Billionaires here in the Philippines. The Sy’s. Tan’s and Go’s. As in sila na talaga!

Francesca tossed back her long, wavy black locks and sniffed. ‘You know I only wear six designers: Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Etro, my dear friend Stella McCartney and Brunello Cucinelli for country weekends.

To be honest, if you love Vogue Magazine just as much as I do, then you are in for a treat with Crazy Rich Asians, a novel by Kevin Kwan. It’s the literary version of Rich Kids on Instagram where everybody both left and right talk about labels and nothing but labels. But even more to that, there is also a love story involved between star-crossed lovers and a wedding, but not just any wedding. “It’s Colin Khoo and Araminta’s Wedding” according to Wye Mun. This is after all entitled, CRAZY, RICH ASIANS.

There’s the welcome party tonight on the yacht, the wedding tomorrow morning, which will be followed by a reception, and a wedding banquet in the evening. And then there’s a tea ceremony on Sunday…And everyone is going to be decked out in jewels and ball gowns for the wedding banquet! It’s going to be the grandest event of the decade. There will be be big-time celebrities and royalty there!

But the main story revolves around a crazy rich Nicholas Young meeting a not-so-rich-American-Born Chinese (ABC) Rachel Chu while studying in America and brings her to his cousin’s wedding in Singapore without her knowing what kind of family he has. Set in Asia, this means that people have cathedral sized mansions, millions and billions of shopping sprees in Paris and the parties with food. Delicious and scrumptious food only available in Asia.

But with every good and light read there are also some not-so good aspects of the book. The story between the two characters were very light. It starts off very strong in the beginning where Rachel learns more about the life of Nicholas but because of the number of back stories with Araminta, Astrid, Eleanor and so much more Chinese characters the story of the star crossed lover is not even worth keeping up with.

Instead, you may enjoy the boldface names of logos and brands that Kevin Kwan name drops into the book. From Prada to Gucci to diamonds raging up to 39 carats. Gold is everywhere and servants even comes from the Sultan of Thailand.

Crazy Rich Asians is the story of a love affair with labels and more labels. If you are into the glossy magazine who enjoys the ads as much as the editorial pages, then this book is for you. Its light, funny and downright crazy. Put on your designer labels, and enjoy a martini in a glass. Crazy Rich Asians is just a light read, nothing too fancy … except the characters living in it.
